JRC contributes to flood impact study
Scientists at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) have contributed to a report evaluating how global risk models are being utilised to minimise the devastating impact of flooding.
According to the JRC, the European Commission’s inhouse science body, the organisation helped assess how different computer models are being used to evaluate the social and economic impact of flooding. The report focuses on the use of several technical demonstrations, notably the ‘Aqueduct Global Flood Analyzer’ and the ‘Global Flood Awareness System’ (GloFAS), as well as various case studies.
GloFAS was developed by the JRC and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.
The report also provides an overview of the benefits and drawbacks of flood risk models, as well as an emphasis on encouraging multidisciplinary research collaboration to overcome future difficulties.
The JRC is funded by Horizon 2020. The study is published in Nature Climate Change.
